The ANTI-BIOGRAM OF METHICILLIN-RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS AMONG PATIENTS WITH SURGICAL SITE AND WOUND INFECTIONS AT SIR YAHAYA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, BIRNIN KEBBI”
Abstract
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a significant pathogen associated with surgical site infections (SSIs) and wound infections. Its resistance to multiple antibiotics poses challenges in clinical management and necessitates regular surveillance to guide effective treatment strategies. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus constitutes part of the growing health problem associated with chemotherapy because they are more difficult to treat and could transfer drug resistance to other bacteria. A cross-sectional study was carried out. The aim of this study is to determine the “Anti-biogram of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus among patients with Surgical Site and Wound Infections at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi”. A total of 50 surgicals and 50 wounds site were collected from the patience. The samples were inoculated directly on to mannitol salt agar and incubated for 24 hours at 370C. The positive plates for S. aureus colonies were selected and sub-cultured on nutrient agar. The bacterial species was identified using staining techniques and biochemical tests. Staphylococcus aureus isolates were screened for methicillin resistance using 5μg/ml oxacillin disc in Mueller Hinton agar plate. Out of the 100 swab samples analyzed, 56 bacterial isolates were recovered from the culture, 38 (67%) of these isolates were identified by biochemical reactions and gram stain to be Staphylococcus aureus. Out of 56 isolates identified. Wound infections with about 24 (42%) and surgical site with 14(25%). All the MRSA isolated were subjected to sensitivity test, and wound infections isolate shows 18(75%) isolate were resistance to 5μg/ml oxacillin and surgical site with 9(64.29%) resistance isolates.
