Technological strategies for solid waste management: A case study of Kano Metropolis

Management of residential waste is a challenging concern in fast-developing countries around the world especially in cities with increasing population, industrialization, urbanization which collectively enhances pollution. With such huge demand on general social amenities, limited infrastructure, inefficient waste collection systems, poor segregation practices, and limited community engagement continues to be a major constrain which in-turn results to environmental pollution and other public health related issues. This study explores technology-based approach to improve residential waste handling methods, with a major focus on making the process more innovative, efficient, sustainable, and environmental friendly. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used for mapping and tracking waste collection points, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors were embedded in waste bins to monitor bin levels in real-time and mobile apps which provide residents’ means for feedback, reporting issues, receive alert and participate in the waste management process. By examining current waste management practices in some selected local government areas within Kano, the research identifies key challenges and proposes practical digital solutions suited to the local context. The integration of GIS, IoT and mobile technologies presents a promising pathway toward transforming waste management in fast growing urban areas. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform policy-making, promote smarter urban planning and inspire further innovation in environmental management strategies tailored to the needs of rapidly developing cites.
